Russia offers bonuses of $22,000 to those who want to fight in Ukraine

The authorities in Moscow are offering a record bonus for new recruits who agree to go and fight in Ukraine, in an attempt to attract as many soldiers as possible to the army, writes the Defense Monitor, citing CNN.

These bonuses appear in the context in which President Vladimir Putin wants to recruit as many soldiers as possible to be able to face the difficulties encountered on the front in Ukraine.

Moscow mayor Serghei Sobianin announced the introduction of this $22,000 bonus, offered only once, upon enlisting in the army.

Moreover, new recruits are promised earnings of $59,600 in their first year of military service. Those who will join the army in Ukraine can receive – only once – and sums between 5,690-11,390 dollars for injuries suffered in the war, depending on “their severity”, and the family of a soldier killed in the war could receive 34,150 dollars .

It is estimated that the number of Russians killed or seriously injured in the war in Ukraine is very high, reaching approximately half a million. In May and June alone, 70,000 Russians died or were seriously injured, immediately after the start of the assault on Kharkiv, according to the British intelligence services.

How many military does Russia have?

According to a decree signed in December 2023, Putin called for an increase in the number of soldiers in the Russian army by 170,000, thus reaching 2.2 million personnel, including 1.32 million soldiers. This would mean a 15% increase in the Russian army, the second such increase since the beginning of the invasion.

Analysts believe that, at this moment, Russia does not have the necessary number of troops to be able to launch a major offensive in Ukraine, which would bring it some strategic gains.

Things are not more favorable on the other side of the conflict either. Ukraine also needs more soldiers and more equipment, especially anti-aircraft systems, ammunition and drones. As for Ukrainian losses, President Zelensky said, at the beginning of the year, that the number reaches 30,000 dead soldiers, but it is possible that it is higher. Ukraine does not provide information on recorded losses.
