Russia praises JD Vance’s critical look at Ukraine aid

Russia is ready to cooperate with any American leader who is willing to enter into a “reasonable and mutually respectful dialogue”, says the country’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov.

At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomes JD Vance’s – who is Donald Trump’s newly appointed vice-presidential candidate – attitude towards Ukraine.

JD Vance has been critical of the US’s economic and military support for the country. He wants to cut aid and has said Ukraine has no chance of regaining the areas Russia has taken over since the February 2022 invasion.

And that is a perspective that Russia appreciates.

– He (JD Vance, ed.) is in favor of peace, he is in favor of ending the support that is being given. We can only welcome this, because this is what we need – to stop pumping Ukraine full of weapons, and then the war will stop, says Sergey Lavrov.

Among America’s allies in Europe, the choice of JD Vance as vice presidential candidate has sparked concern.

Trump himself has been critical of Congress’s latest aid package for Ukraine, which was passed in April. But unlike Vance, he has not directly opposed the support.

Trump also said last month that he does not accept Russian President Vladimir Putin’s conditions for ending the war.

Putin has said that Russia will end the war if Ukraine gives up four regions to the east and south that Russia has claimed.

Trump – who was president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 – and the current president, Joe Biden, are likely to face each other in the November 5 presidential election.

– We will cooperate with any American leader that the people of the United States choose, says Lavrov.
