Russia has come out to condemn France’s suggestion that the West may also consider sending troops to Ukraine in response to rumors of North Korea sending troops to Russia.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS on the 22nd (local time), the Russian Embassy in France issued a comment that day, protesting that “it is an irresponsible statement to call for the deployment of Western troops on Ukrainian territory.”
“Practical steps in this direction will essentially lead to a full-scale conflict between North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries and Russia on the battlefield,” the embassy warned.
“(The French defense minister’s) confusing reasoning about the need for Ukraine to sit at the negotiating table only emphasizes the anxiety in the minds of European elites about the issue of peaceful dialogue,” he said.
Earlier, French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu appeared on France’s TF1 the day before and mentioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s victory plan and suggested that a conventional deterrent should be deployed to prevent future Russian aggression.
When asked whether France should send troops to Ukraine in relation to rumors of North Korea sending troops to Russia, he replied, “We have been debating training,” and added, “What is happening in North Korea will probably be a turning point.”
