The Kremlin decided to arm its ally in the event of a war with NATO. The Belarusian Army has just received another, seventh battery Russian Tor-M2K air defense systems. This defensive weapon will protect strategic facilities against missile attacks from Western countries.
The Belarusian Ministry of National Defense officially announced the entire project. Photos have been published online showing the transport of Russian systems to Belarus by rail. As reported by the Hajun daily, the new equipment may be included in the equipment 15th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.
Russia sent powerful Tor-M2K systems to Belarus
Interestingly, in addition to the Tor-M2K defense systems themselves, they also became part of the army’s equipment four 9A331MK combat vehiclesa transport and loading vehicle and a support vehicle, which are intended to keep the set in perfect combat condition in case war with NATO breaks out unexpectedly.
Belarus received Tor-M2K surface-to-air missile systems (“K” – wheeled) on a wheeled chassis developed and manufactured by the Minsk Wheeled Tractor Plant. There is also a version on a tracked chassis. It is a short-range missile system designed to destroy aerodynamic targets such as airplanes, helicopters and other aircraft, as well as guided missiles flying at medium, low and very low altitudes.
Tor-M2K will allow for better protection of Belarus
The basis of the system is 9M9331 surface-to-air guided missilewhich can hit targets at a distance of 15 kilometers and at altitudes of up to 10 kilometers. Most often, these systems are used to protect important strategic facilities or military units.
Tor-M2K is a powerful support for the Belarusian army. As military analysts from Defense Blog emphasize, this country does not have its own new defense systems. Most of the army is based on sets dating back to the times of the Soviet Union. If Russia went to war with NATO, Belarus could fall in a few days, which would create a huge threat to the Kremlin.
Russia suffers from a deficit of air defense systems
That is why Vladimir Putin is trying to better equip the Belarusian army, but currently Russia itself has huge problems with the availability of air defense systems. It is estimated that in less than three years of the war in Ukraine, Russia lost over 200 sets of such defensive weapons. The last one was completely successful Ukrainian attacks with ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles on Russian territory revealed the Kremlin’s huge problems.
