Russia set to increase drone production tenfold, says Vladimir Putin

The war between Russia and Ukraine is also being played out on the industrial front. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Russia is increasing drone production tenfold to nearly 1.4 million units by 2024, an effort aimed at ensuring victory for its armed forces in Ukraine.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the conflict has fueled the development of the drone industry and illustrated the importance of these unmanned flying devices in so-called modern warfare, whether it is to sow panic among infantry units, collect intelligence, sabotage infrastructure or attack arsenals.

VOS INDICES

“In total, about 140,000 drones of various types were delivered to the Armed Forces in 2023,” Vladimir Putin said at a meeting in St. Petersburg on drone production. “This year, the production of drones is expected to increase significantly. Well, to be more precise, almost 10 times,” he added.

Both Russia and Ukraine have purchased drones abroad and increased their own production since the start of the war.

Development of anti-drone defenses

The Russian president said that Russia is making almost weekly progress in the field of drone technology and that it must also develop its anti-drone defenses, that is, technology that detects, disorients and shoots down enemy drones. “The main task is to produce a wide range of unmanned aerial vehicles and establish serial production as quickly as possible,” he said.
