Russian journalists’ Olympic accreditations revoked

The committee organizing the Paris Olympics has revoked the accreditation of four of its journalists, Russian public news agency TASS said.

TASS said the cancellation of the journalists’ accreditation was “unexpected”; the four journalists in question had travelled to Paris, received their accreditation cards and covered several events, including the opening ceremony.

“The Paris 2024 Organizing Committee said the decision was taken by French authorities but did not provide a reason,” the agency said in a statement.

The International Olympic Committee and the French Foreign Ministry did not comment when contacted by French news agency AFP.

Some Russian journalists were denied accreditation before the Games began, and Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “Protecting journalists’ rights and ensuring freedom of expression are empty words for President Emmanuel Macron and his gang.”

Only 15 Russian athletes are competing in the 2024 Olympics. Due to Russia’s occupation of Ukraine, these athletes cannot compete with their own flag.

A few days before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, a Russian citizen was detained on suspicion of “trying to cause unrest at the Games”.
