Iran submitted a “note of protest” to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the alleged forcible detention of two Iranian students at a university in the Russian city of Kazan. It was announced by the Iranian media, writes TASR according to the report of the AFP agency.
Two Iranian students visited a visa extension center at Kazan Federal University on Friday, where they were allegedly “inhumanely and unprofessionally beaten” by local police and then detained, state news agency IRNA reported, citing a statement from Iran’s consulate in Kazan.
In response to the incident, Iran sent a “note of protest” to the Russian Foreign Ministry, condemning the “violent treatment of Iranian students by the police” and asking Russia for an explanation.
The local police reported via the Telegram social network that a fight had broken out between the students, with the police “detaining (its) initiators”. The police did not state the nationality of the detained persons.
Russia’s Regional Investigative Committee announced on Friday that two foreigners were detained for allegedly “using violence against an official of the authority”.
The students were released late on Friday after the intervention of the Iranian consulate, AFP writes.
