Russians Name the Amount of Desired Basic Income

23% of respondents believe that the ideal basic income should be in the range of 40 to 50 thousand rubles. Another 18% of respondents indicated that they would be satisfied with an amount of 20 to 30 thousand rubles, and 16% spoke in favor of payments over 75 thousand rubles.

The greatest support for the idea of ​​a basic income among residents of cities with a population of over one million was expressed in Nizhny Novgorod (60%), Krasnoyarsk (59%) and Voronezh (57%).

The highest requests for monthly government payments were recorded in Moscow — 44.8 thousand rubles. Krasnoyarsk and Yekaterinburg took second place with a request of 44.3 thousand rubles, and third place went to Chelyabinsk, where residents would like to receive 43.5 thousand rubles. In St. Petersburg, the desired amount was 40.2 thousand rubles. The most modest requests were from residents of Perm — 35.3 thousand rubles.

The study was conducted from September 9 to 17, 2024 and covered 1.6 thousand Russians over 18 years of age throughout Russia.

  • In July, the Central Bank predicted a 2.5-fold slowdown in the growth rate of real wages for Russians next year. The acute shortage of personnel was cited as the reason for the sharp increase in wages in the country. According to analysts, businesses can no longer continue to increase payments at the same rate, as loans have become expensive. Their calculations were based on forecasts for nominal wages and average inflation.
  • According to the Ministry of Economic Development’s forecasts, in 2025 the average salary will increase by 13.2% and will amount to 99.9 thousand rubles, in 2026 – by 10.2%, to 110.1 thousand rubles, in 2027 – by 8.3%, to 119.2 thousand rubles.
