Rustic style houses: stone and terracotta for a country villa in Menorca

Mediterranean style, but with a brilliant surprise. In the Menorcan countryside, a ruin with an adjoining barn in a completely abandoned state has risen like a phoenix thanks to the project of Bridge Workshop. The old country house, now a 300 square meter holiday villa with private swimming pool, has a traditional look, with tiled roofwhite plastered facades and portions of exposed stone; the recovery of the local vernacular is however renewed through functional and modern insertssuch as the off-center pivot iroko windows designed to maximize the view of the 76-hectare land surrounding the residence, or the fluorescent ceramic kitchen.

Il acid yellow of the room dedicated to food preparation is like an electric shock, which lights up the space with terracotta floorsthe same ones found throughout the villa. The taste for the eclectic and for the mix of styles of the owners, mother and daughter with a passion for travel and cultures, it is found in the pieces of furniture. In the living room, the sofa with a brick base – which immediately makes you feel like you’re in a holiday home – is paired with French modernist seating and artisanal pieces from the Balearic Islands. In a passageway, with arched doors carved into the massive brickwork, vases and jars come from Africa.

Il refined raw flavour of the finishes is the fil rouge of the project, and is therefore also repeated in the more private areas of the villa. In the bedroom, the headboard hand-woven by local artisans Cañadas Murùa is surprising, combined with objects of production chosen for their natural materials. In the bathroom, the stone sink is modernized by the combination with a pair of wall lights minimalist in metal and with a round mirror with a fire-red frame; the walk in shower on the contrary, it focuses entirely on roughness, with terracotta walls and floors.

The house is completed by a swimming pool with high edges and a brick solarium, and a natural garden, with garrigue and wild olive trees.
