Last week the Ryzen 7 9800X3D was released and a buyer is reporting a burn on his new processor. According to a thread on Reddit ran the processor in an MSI Tomahawk X870 – an AM5 motherboard – and both the pins under the processor and the socket had visible burn marks.
It is still unclear what caused the injuries. In the Reddit thread where the images were shared, some speculate that the socket may have been damaged or that the processor was inserted incorrectly.
How common this problem is with 9800X3D processors is still unclear. So far, it appears to be an isolated incident. According to Jonas Thörnqvist, test editor at SweClockers, it is very rare for processors to burn in this way.
– Based on the user’s pictures, it looks like a classic handling error, where the processor has been mounted crookedly in the socket and then shorted. The damaged plastic parts in the plinth clearly indicate this, he says.
When the predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, was launched, some reported that the processors were burnt. The reason was that the voltage in the socket exceeded recommended levels in some motherboards. However, that problem was fixed with a software update.
