Saki West Are Champions Of Bayewuwon Foundation Tournament

Saki West Local Government have emerged champions of the Bayewuwon Foundation football tournament for the 10 local governments in Oke-Ogun axis of Oyo State.

In a keenly contested final at the Irewole Stadium in Saki on Saturday, 27 July, 2024, the Asabari Boys outclassed their neighbours, Atisbo Local Government by two goals to nothing to lift the Bayewuwon Foundation trophy.

To qualify for the final, Atisbo defeated Saki East 3-1 in the preliminary round and upset Iseyin 4-3 on penalties in the semi-final, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. On their part, Saki West defeated Itesiwaju 3-0 in the prelims, and beat Olorunsogo 2-0 in the semis. They won the gold trophy, scoring seven goals in total without conceding any.

The week-long tournament was watched every day by an appreciable crowd. Apart from the gold trophy, the winners went home with a cash prize of N300,000 while the second, third and fourth teams got N200,000, N100,000 and N50,000 respectively. All the 10 teams were kitted by the sponsors in addition to receiving feeding, transport and preparation allowances.

Chairman of Bayewuwon Foundation, Prince Kayode Oyetunde Bayewuwon expressed delight at the success of the tournament which he said was organised to support the youths of Oyo State. He thanked the divisional FA and the Local Organising Committee for a hitch-free event. He then gave a commitment to organise clinics for football coaches in Oyo state and also reach out to widows and artisans with his foundation’s empowerment programmes.

The football final was attended by prominent community leaders including a representative of the King, the Okere of Saki. Having organised a similar competition in the Ogbomoso axis of the state, Prince Oyetunde said the next stop of his foundation was the Oyo and Ibadan axis as he continues his quest to impact the people of Oyo State in a positive way.
