Las electric car sales have fallen in Europe. In most of the continent’s large markets, such as Germany and France, sales of electric cars have taken their foot off the accelerator. In SpainHowever, the sales of electric passenger cars continue to risealthough very timidly.
Spain continues to be far from Europe’s decarbonization objectives with a market share of almost 6% of sales for electrified cars (electric and PHEV). And in that small market share there is a clear winner, the Tesla Model 3, evidencing the fact that the electric car market in Spain is dominated by the signature of Elon Musk.
Tesla’s overwhelming dominance
Despite a month of December in which sales of electric cars have stepped on the accelerator, rising 41% compared to December 2023, reaching 9,573 registrations, it has not been enough to achieve a marked increase in the annual count . This translates into a timid 4.2%.
Even so, it is a positive result compared to the other most important markets in Europe, such as France, Germany and Italy, where sales of electrified cars, especially electric ones, have decreased.
Although in December 2024 the pure electric market share reached 7.81%, throughout the year, the Electric sales total 65,478 units4.2% more than in the same period of the previous year, with a cumulative share for the year of 5.36%.
In this small market area, Tesla presents itself as the undisputed winner, placing the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y in the first two positions, followed very far by the MG 4. Of the Tesla Model 3 has sold more than 11,000 units (4,927 more than in 2023) and Model Y almost 5,600 units (1,383 less than in 2023).
In total, the American brand has sold 16,138 cars in Spain. That’s almost 3,000 more cars than the total of the other eight models that make up the best-selling list.
On the other hand, the list of the 10 best sellers in Spain shows the dominion of china on the sale of electric cars, with tariffs that at the moment do not seem to have any effect.
And China does it both because of the presence of three models from Chinese brands (one MG and two BYD) on the list and because of the overwhelming number of models manufactured in China, seven of the 10 best-selling cars are currently Made In China. The Volvo EX30 and the MINI Cooper SE will be manufactured in Europe within a year and the most powerful versions of the Model Y are manufactured in Germany. In the Top 10, however, there is only one South Korean model, the electric Kia Niro.
The photo finish of electric sales in Spain highlights the need to offer cars to reasonable price and with features as close as possible to those of a gasoline car. It is something that Elon Musk’s productions are excellent at, as well as the MG 4 and the Volvo EX30. This also explains the presence of two BYD modelsthe Atto 3 and the Dolphin in the Top 10.
