September 2024 saw a sharp drop in sales of gasoline and diesel cars associated with a rebound in sales of 100% electric cars. Furthermore, the rise of hybrid cars, which already represent a third of sales, shows that the automotive revolution in Europe continues, according to the latest figures for september of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
Thus, the September automobile market has entered a phase never seen before, with an increase in the share of plug-in vehicles in the entire European automobile market to 24.1%, with a 17.3% 100% electric cars.
A European electric car market with much room for improvement
Added to the 32.8% market share of conventional hybrids, this means that around 60% of all passenger cars sold in Europe in September 2024 were equipped with some type of electrification. Between plug-ins and hybrids, 56.7% of sales were electrified models.
After several months of decline due mainly to the end of purchase incentives in almost all of Europe, sales of 100% electric cars rose again in September. They represented 17.3% of new car sales in Europe, compared to 14.8% in September 2023, with a rebound especially in Germany, Belgium, Italy and Spain.
However, with a 14% market share Since the beginning of the year, sales of zero-emission vehicles remain 0.9 points lower than in the first nine months of 2023.
How, then, to achieve the European objective of banning the sales of cars with combustion engines and hybrids by 2035? “We are still a long way from the flourishing electricity market that Europe needs,” comments Sigrid de Vries, CEO of ACEA, in a press release.
And he adds: “We should see constant and substantial monthly growth, especially at this crucial moment in the development of this technology. “In contrast, the market share for electric cars so far this year is almost 1% lower than last year, while volumes remain almost 6% lower.”
Diesel sales plummet
Another trend is the popularity of hybrid cars, whose sales reach 32.8% of the market (an increase of 5.4 points in one year), surpassing gasoline cars for the first time (29.8% of the market, compared to 34% in September 2023).
These models, which have limited advantages over 100% internal combustion engines, are still much cheaper than electric cars, and have been especially popular in Spain and France. As for the diesel cars, their sales continue to plummet (-23.5%)and the former king of fuels now only represents 10.4% of the market.
