Full speed ahead on stop to emissions on the road in 2035but with “a broad range of innovative technologies” and “a technology-neutral approach, in which synthetic fuels can play a role through a targeted amendment of the regulation as part of the planned review”.
In short words, Ursula von der Leyen says “yes” to the e-fuelsynthetic fuels that would keep combustion engines alive even after the middle of the next decade, when the ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars will come into force in Europe.
Good luck
The speech was delivered in front of the European Parliament, where Von der Leyen presented herself as a candidate for the presidency of the EU Commission and where she was reconfirmed with 401 votes in favor, 284 against and 15 abstentions, for a second mandate that will carry forward the objectives of the Green Deal with more “pragmatism”.
“The ban on internal combustion engines from 2035,” the president added, speaking to journalists in Strasbourg, as reported by press agencies, “will require a technology-neutral approach, in which e-fuels and electric vehicles will have the same chances. It is important to stick to the objectives and for the technology to be neutral.”
See you in 2026
It will therefore be up to the European Commission to give e-fuels a role in the transition of cars towards zero emissions. A task that should be completed in 2026, when – according to the dossier that decrees the ban on combustion engines, with a safeguard clause in favor of alternative fuels to electric – Brussels will have to reassess the environmental sustainability of synthetic fuels and possibly authorize their use.
Von der Leyen stresses however that “the climate neutrality target for cars set for 2035 creates predictability for investors and producers”. From now on, however, not only with electric cars. No mention, however, for biofuels, the biological fuels that are the workhorse of the Italian Government in Europe.
