Sami Khedira perplexed by Kim’s performance

FC Bayern started the new season with a 3-2 victory under new coach Vincent Kompany. But as in the previous season, the defense caused some headaches. Central defender Minjae Kim in particular did not cut a happy figure again.

The South Korean, who moved from SSC Naples to the German record champions last summer for around 50 million euros, was responsible for VfL Wolfsburg’s 2-1 lead due to his lax tackling and appeared insecure in some situations.

After the match, “DAZN” expert Sami Khedira was perplexed by the 27-year-old’s performance in the FC Bayern jersey: “In Serie A, he was a monster. He ran after every ball, he didn’t lose a single duel. Victor Osimhen was desperate in training, he was happy that Kim was gone. You don’t see this Kim here at Bayern Munich.”

Bayern coach Kompany criticizes defense

Nevertheless, the 2014 World Champion did not want to write off the central defender completely: “It’s not about hitting Kim, for God’s sake, not on the first match day.” Nevertheless, the former Real star made it clear that the mistake before the Wolves’ 2-1 win was clearly an “individual mistake.”

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany also criticized his team’s defensive work after the match, but avoided criticizing a single player: “In the second half, we came out of the dressing room poorly, made a lot of build-up errors and a big mistake before the second goal.”

It remains to be seen whether Kim’s absence will have any consequences for him. After the departure of Matthijs de Ligt and the injuries to new signing Hiroki Ito and returning loan player Josip Stanisic, FC Bayern is thin on the central defence. This may be why sporting director Christoph Freund hinted that there could still be transfer movements in defence.

Next weekend, FC Bayern will face SC Freiburg in their home Allianz Arena.
