Apple could turn to Samsung to solve one of the biggest problems of its Vision Pro device: the high price.
Apple Vision Pro, equipped with an OLEDoS screen made by Sony with a pixel density of 3,391ppi, it did not reach hoped-for sales expectations mainly due to its prohibitive cost, fixed a 4.000 euro in European countries where it is available. Apple is planning to launch a cheaper version of the device to stimulate consumer interest and increase sales.
To make a more accessible version of the Vision Pro, Apple considers the use of W-OLED+CF panels provided by Samsung Display. These panels use a combination of white OLED with a color filter, a setup that could reduce costs compared to the OLEDoS technology used currently.
However, there is an important technical challenge to overcome: Samsung’s panels currently achieve a pixel density of 426ppi, much lower than the 1,500ppi needed by Apple. Samsung is already at work on this technology and plans to install new research equipment at its A3 OLED manufacturing facility to develop the required panels.
This move could not only benefit Apple but also intensify competition in the mixed reality devices marketwhere Samsung plans to launch its own XR headset next year.
The history of collaboration between Apple and Samsung in the display industry is intriguing and reflects the overall nature of technological progress and competition in the vast territory of the electronics industry. These two giants have often collaborated despite being direct rivals in other market segments. Their partnership on display technologies has led to significant developments that have benefited global consumers.
Curiously, the primo display OLED it was made in Eastman Kodak’s labs way back in 1979. This shows how long it sometimes takes for a technology to go from basic research to commercial application. Since then, manufacturing methodologies have become more refined and affordable in terms of costs, allowing a wide range of consumers to enjoy the benefits of this technology.
Guarding the future, the focus on production costs and efficiency will continue to be centralespecially for devices like the Apple Vision Pro. The challenge of making the latest technology accessible to a wider audience is a priority for these tech giants. Reducing costs while maintaining high quality will be essential for the widespread diffusion of augmented and virtual reality.
Apple’s collaboration with Samsung in the field of display technologies not only underlines theirs mutual dependence but also their shared commitment to bringing disruptive innovations to the market, thus influencing the entire technology sector globally.
