If anything, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 that was unveiled last week has managed to garner positive reviews so far. But despite its excellent capabilities and sophisticated hardware, many users stand on something that lags aesthetically, namely its volume the thickness reaches 5.6 mm when unfolded and 12.1 mm in the folded state, making it look a bit uglier compared to some Chinese competitors. However, Samsung’s next foldable smartphone could be significantly thinner since η KED Global reports that TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung’s MX team, wants to the next foldables belonging to the Galaxy family to be thinner. That’s why he asked his team to develop an “extremely thin foldable smartphone”.
Citing industry sources, the new report claims that Roh asked Samsung engineers to develop a foldabe that is as thin as the Galaxy S24 when folded. The S24 is 7.6mm thick, while the S24+ and S24 Ultra are 7.7mm and 8.6mm respectively.
Even if Samsung manages to match its next foldable to the thickness of the S24 Ultra, its next foldable would be 3.5mm thinner than the Fold6 when it’s in folded status, meaning it’s 1.3mm slimmer than last year’s Fold5. The source also claims that the MX team is working on reducing it the weight of the next folding under 239 grams.
It is also said that by the end of 2024, a 10mm thick Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim will also be revealed, with subsequent models being thinner. It will feature an 8″ foldable screen, which will be bigger than the Fold6’s 7.6″ foldable screen.
In addition to developing a slimmer foldable smartphone, the company is reportedly working on creating special content for foldables, for which it is working with Google and other developers of apps based on the Android system.
