Flip is currently (rightfully so) one of the most successful products that Samsung has in its huge quiver. The creation of a compact clamshell foldable device may have originally been a “bet” (both from a manufacturing and commercial point of view), however the experiment was a complete success. And that’s because after 4 years of seeing each other the first Flip (2020), the stylish and elegant foldable of the Korean technology giant, has managed to surpass the Fold (which is also the harbinger of the new era of foldables). Indicative of its huge success is that it is estimated that in the Greek market, the correspondence is 55% Flip and 45% Fold, while it is also the favorite foldable of the female audience, as 60% of its users belong to the female gender. In this year’s version (Flip6), we shouldn’t expect big changes, as the Galaxy AI and the dynamics that accompany it have fatally pushed hardware upgrades to second place. However, the Korean company refuted us in a very pleasant way, and this is because the Flip6 is not a simple “sequel” of its predecessor (with minimal interventions), but a noticeably improved device at the hardware level, a sign that Samsung knows very well what the needs of its clamshell foldable users are. Let’s go and see in more detail what the new Flip has in store for us…
Endurance to… the cold!
When foldables were first released, most users were worried about their durability, as they seemed extremely “fragile” in their eyes. Nevertheless, Samsung being the company that in recent years could be considered a pioneer in foldables, over the years, its development team put the burden on improving resilience of its folding models. And indeed the new Flip, as we will see below, manages to surpass last year’s version in durability.
From the very first moment you hold Flip6 in your hands. The armor aluminum material that surrounds it constitutes durability guarantee (scratches are not in the vocabulary of the new Flip), as the device is undoubtedly super durable. And because as the old saying goes “the enemy of the good is only the best”, the Dual Rail Hinge mechanism has been strengthened more than ever, while the device has been designed to withstand even more pressure and shock. One element that immediately impressed us is that the “creasing” at the point where the screen folds is almost non-existent. The existence of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass is a guarantee of protection, while the device has a special IP48 certification that allows it to survive at a depth of 1.5 meters and for a period of time that amounts to close to 30 minutes.
Judging by the above, the weight just 187 grams clamshell foldable it is twice as durable as last year’s version, while maintaining the same elegance and compact design that made it so famous and loved (it fits literally everywhere). In particular, in folded status its thickness “plays” at 14.9mm, while in unfolded status, the Flip6 is below the barrier of 7mm (6.9mm to be exact). We also have small cosmetic interventions in camera modules of the device (there is a colored border around the module), but where we have the most important change is definitely in the external FlexWindow screen, which has grown from the 1.9 inches of last year’s version to 3.4 inches! This practically means more space to display your favorite widgets and apps (such as YouTube, Health, Reminder, Samsung News, etc.), without having to open the phone, offering the same favorite quick access experience ( you can even display multiple widgets and apps on a single page). At the same time, Samsung gave great importance to the personalization part of the external cover screen, so Flip6 users can with typical ease add their own aesthetic touches to the external screen. If nothing else, Samsung once again “was listened to» the needs of Flip users, who were thirsty for even more space in the FlexWindow area.
And since we’re talking about… screens, its specs are an option Super AMOLED 3.4 inches, with a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels with a pixel density of 306ppi. In Unfolded status, the internal display has a diagonal at 6.7 inches and it is technology LTPO AMOLED 2X, with a variable refresh rate at 120Hz, while at the same time it supports HDR10+, with brightness levels reaching 2600 nits (peak). And the screen-to-body ratio amounts to 85.5%with quite delicate bezels, giving enough space for viewing content and for your professional tasks.
Do the Flip!
The Flip6 may be extremely compact and slim, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hide a real powerful chipset inside, as choosing a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3., is ideal for carrying the burden of multitasking but also of processes related to Galaxy AI functions and applications related to content creation. This octa-core solution consists of an implementation that includes: 1×3.39GHz Cortex-X4, 3×3.1GHz Cortex-A720, 2×2.9GHz Cortex-A720 and 2×2.2GHz Cortex-A520, with the Adreno GPU 750 to cover the part of the visuals. A noticeable difference compared to last year’s model has to do with the available RAM, as in the new Flip you will find 12GB LPDDR5 RAM (compared to the Flip5’s 8GB).
And if the increase in RAM seemed more like an imperative but also an “expected addition”, since we are talking about a foldable flagship that requires as much help as possible from the hardware, the surprise comes with the existence of a new cooling system, which essentially debuts on a Galaxy Z Flip device. The specially designed vapor chamber (indeed the said “chamber” of the Galaxy Z Flip6 is 150% larger than that of the S23 Ultra) works as a “plate” whose mission is to absorbs heat, thus helping to cool the device. Smooth temperatures translate into lagless performanceeven when the going gets tough, so we think Samsung made a MATTE move, upgrading the hardware of the new Flip to a terrible level, thus giving it the ability to withstand even more pressure that might be exerted by the most demanding applications but also from mobile games that traditionally raise the temperature and strain all the subsystems of a smartphone.
Regarding the available storage space here there are two options: at 256GB and at 512GB (the ability to increase the space via microSD card is not supported), with UFS 4.0 taking your breath away with its speed. In terms of connectivity, of course, the Galaxy Z Flip6 has everything a power user is looking for, as it supports: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e, tri-band, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and of course all known GPS standards.
Arriving at camera setuphere Samsung wanted to correct a striking weakness of the Flip5, for this reason the main camera sensor (Wide) is clearly more improved, offering photos that reach a resolution of 50MP(f/1.8, 23mm (wide), 1.0µm, dual pixel PDAF and OIS support). The second lens is an honest ultrawide at 12MP (f/2.2, 123˚), which does its job very well, while finally on the internal screen you will find a 10MP camera (f:/2.2). Judging by the photographic result, the quality upgrade of the main camera sensor undoubtedly gives a more crystal clear and sharp result. They don’t various AI-based features concerning the improvement of the photographic result, undoubtedly constitute a pleasant note, with the AI-powered portraits and Auto Zoom to give a different dimension to the optimization of your photos. The existence of an Instagram Night function is ideal for influencers looking for a bright effect in their Insta stories, while the use of the Flip as a kind of camcorder (Samsung calls this feature camcorder grip) is excellent, which gives impressive stability in any shot from any angle.
Although it could not be characterized as “the best of the best” in the field of mobile photography, Samsung found a way in this year’s edition to significantly upgrade the experience it gives to content creation enthusiasts. At this point it is worth adding that Samsung’s elegant foldable flagship can shoot video at 4K@30/60fps (HDR 10+) with highly satisfactory results. They don’t “night” videos they are definitely one of the big assets of the new clamshell foldable flagship of the Korean company.
In conclusion, our review on the Galaxy Z Flip6, the last part that we have an improvement over the Flip5, concerns the increase in battery capacity. Essentially, we have the largest battery capacity we’ve ever had on a Flip, as it reaches 4.000mAh (300mAh more than last year’s model). The device offers charging at 25W (wired), reaching 50% within 30 minutes, according to Samsung officials. Finally, it is worth noting that the Flip6 supports 15W wireless and 4.5 reverse wireless charging.
The most powerful Flip ever… until the next one
The Flip6 comes with Android 14 but also OneUI 6.1.1 and as you can imagine the focus in the field of software is none other than the dynamic functions of Artificial Intelligence. With Galaxy AI at the core of the Flip6 user experience, here all the features (Transcript, Note Assist, Chat Assist, Call Assist, Circle to Search, AI browsing, etc.) that we first saw on the S24 form the cornerstone for User Experience that Flip gives to the power user. Add the newest to Plus Sketch AI which enables you to design a sketch and the AI takes it upon itself to recognize it and then add it to a photo of you in its normal dimension. And the support may remain a bit… lacking, due to the absence of the Greek language (which we aspire to see in the next package of supported languages), nevertheless Galaxy AI is a new “world” that if nothing else makes us more productive and handles our tasks with speed beyond just optimizing the photographic result.
In summary, the Flip6 is the most complete Flip we’ve seen until of course the…next! Samsung really did a great job of “investing” in a targeted way in upgrading important parts of the hardware, making the newest Flip a device that you really enjoy from the moment you press Power ON! Offering a more alternative user experience, you can’t help but… love it!
