Samsung is making a few subtle but important changes to the new Galaxy Z Fold 6. This affects the front and main display. We have compared all the changes from the Fold 5 to the Fold 6 for you!
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Samsung increases prices
Foldables are the most expensive smartphones you can buy – especially book-sized devices like the Galaxy Fold. With the new Fold 6, the Koreans have now increased the prices once again by 100 euros per storage option. Meanwhile, nothing has changed in terms of the storage and RAM options:
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (12/256 GB) for 1.999 Euro
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (12/512 GB) for 2.119 Euro
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (12 GB/1 TB) for 2.359 Euro
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Finally a wider external display
Despite constant calls, it took six generations for Samsung to decide to take this step: The new Fold 6 has a wider external display at 6.3 inches than its predecessor (6.2 inches), which significantly improves usability when closed. The Fold 6 therefore displays text on websites larger and the keyboard for answering messages is now larger. Thanks to the larger display, the resolution increases slightly from 904 x 2,316 pixels on the Fold 5 to 968 x 2,376 pixels on the Fold 6.
The main display remains at its large 7.6-inch diagonal. Here, too, the resolution increases slightly from 1,812 x 2,176 pixels on the Fold 5 to 1,850 x 2,160 pixels on the Fold 6. However, you won’t notice any difference with the naked eye. The fold is different. Samsung has significantly reduced the crease on the Fold 6 compared to the Fold 5.
A variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hertz is available, as with the Fold 5. Samsung wants to have improved the display brightness on the Fold 6 from 1,750 nits to 2,600 nits, which should benefit better readability in sunlight. Anyone who wants to use the large panel for artistic purposes or for writing notes can again use a stylus (S-Pen) with the Fold.
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Colors, design and dimensions
In general, the Fold 6 has become much more angular compared to the Fold 5. As with the Flip 6, there are no longer any rounded edges; the frame is ground flat all around. In terms of dimensions, the Fold 6 has become thinner compared to the Fold 5. This is due, among other things, to the narrower hinge. When unfolded, it is now only 5.6 millimeters thin. The 6 is also slightly shorter and wider than the 5:
- Galaxy Fold 6 dimensions (unfolded): 153.5 x 132.6 x 5.6 millimeters
- Galaxy Fold 5 dimensions (unfolded): 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.1 millimeters
- Galaxy Fold 6 dimensions (folded): 153.5 x 68.1 x 12.1 millimeters
- Galaxy Fold 5 dimensions (folded): 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.4 millimeters
The weight has also shrunk. At 239 grams, the Fold 6 is a whopping 14 grams lighter than the Fold 5. This has a positive effect on handling. As with the Flip 6, Samsung is now communicating a light dust protection for the Fold 6 for the first time. Instead of specifying IPX8 as with the Fold 5, the Fold 6 comes with IP48 certification.
The Fold 6 is available in the colors Silver Shadow, Pink and Navy in the open market. The colors Crafted Black and White are available exclusively in the Samsung shop. The selection is slightly different compared to the Fold 5, which was available in the colors Icy Blue, Phantom Black and Cream. Gray and Blue were available exclusively from Samsung.
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Camera undergoes only minimal adjustments
In contrast to the camera unit of the Flip 6, almost everything remains the same on the Fold 6. Samsung has again installed a main camera with 50 megapixels, a new ultra-wide-angle unit with 12 megapixels and a telephoto lens with 10 megapixels and triple zoom. Selfies are again taken with 10 megapixels when the phone is closed.
The selfie camera in the inner display still offers a rather poor resolution. There are only 4 megapixels here. The camera is inconspicuously located under the OLED panel.
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: More power, still full connectivity
As in the Flip 6, Samsung has installed the latest top chipset from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The system should have about 20 percent more performance in the benchmarks than that of the Fold 5. In terms of graphics performance, the increase is about 15 percent if you compare the Fold 5 with the S24 Ultra, which has the same features as the Fold 6.
Samsung is still strong when it comes to connectivity. Like the Fold 5, the Fold 6 is virtually fully equipped and offers Bluetooth 5.3, USB 3.2 including desktop mode (DeX), ultra-wideband and dual SIM via two nano cards or a nano and e-SIM. WiFi 6E is on board, as with the Fold 5. There is no upgrade to WiFi 7.
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Battery size and charging capacity unchanged
Samsung gave the Flip 6 a larger battery, but the Fold 6 remains the same as the Fold 5. Inside is a 4,400 mAh battery, which gave the Fold 5 a runtime of 12:31 hours. The more efficient chipset could mean that the Fold 6 has a longer battery life, but only our test will show that.
The charging power has remained the same, at 25 watts via cable and 15 watts wirelessly. Reverse wireless charging for smartwatches is also back on board.
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Software still strong
Samsung delivers the Fold 6 with the current Android 14 version. The One UI 6.1 user interface is one of the most comprehensive interfaces for smartphones. Samsung adapts the software perfectly to the operating options of the Fold like no other manufacturer.
With the Fold 6, Samsung has introduced a new “composer function” for the Samsung keyboard. It is intended to be the perfect solution for anyone who wants to write texts quickly and easily. The function generates text suggestions for emails and supported social media apps based on simple keywords.
The S-Pen also gets an expanded range of functions in combination with Galaxy AI on the Fold 6. The new “Sketch to Image Function” creates works of art by generating image suggestions from sketches or drawings made with the S-Pen.
Galaxy Fold 6 vs. Fold 5: Is it worth the upgrade?
If you are currently using the Fold 5, you don’t need to upgrade to the Fold 6. The innovations on offer are too limited for that. If you have an older Fold or want to get started with foldables, the Fold 6 is a more modern, more usable foldable than the 5. If you don’t place so much value on the design and the larger front display, the Fold 5 might be a bargain.
