Samsung showed off a prototype of a smartwatch with the world’s brightest screen at CES 2025.
The 2.1-inch display is made using MicroLED technology, has a resolution of 418×540 pixels and a peak brightness of 4000 nits. This is 33% brighter than the OLED display on the Galaxy Watch Ultra.
The company managed to solve the problem with pixel density in MicroLED, which was previously impossible. The prototype has a pixel density of 327 ppi, similar to the Galaxy Watch Ultra.
MicroLED displays consume much less power than OLED screens while maintaining all the benefits of OLED. Additionally, MicroLED screens have faster response speeds than OLED displays and can be used over a wider temperature range.
Samsung hasn’t said when MicroLED will be used in production watches. The first model with this technology is expected to appear in 2025.
At the same time, MicroLED is more difficult and more expensive to produce than OLED. For this reason, Apple refused to use MicroLED in the Apple Watch. It is not yet known whether Samsung was able to solve this problem. (Gizmochina)
