Three years ago, after a long time, Samsung again strayed into the waters of OLED technology. However, as is the case with Samsung, it was not just replicating the technologies of other manufacturers. Along with the new OLED TVs, he also introduced the new Quantum Dot OLED (QD OLED) panel technology.
The new Samsung QE65S95D is the third generation of QD OLED TVs. Since QD OLED technology is still new, a short summary won’t hurt. Most OLED TVs on the market still use panels with WOLED technology, which means that the basis is white OLED points on which RGB color filters are applied. QD OLED, on the other hand, uses blue OLED dots to generate the blue component of the image, and for the other two dots from each triplet, quantum dot layers are directly integrated to generate the red and green components. Thanks to this, compared to conventional OLED technology, the shift of the green and red components is achieved so that they are generated accurately and without impurities. As a result, this means deeper green and red colors, more accurate color presentation, more expressive and overdrawn colors. Another benefit is significantly higher brightness and more vivid colors even when viewed from sharper angles. This is due to the fact that, in the case of classic OLED technology, color filters absorb part of the light and suppress radiation to the sides. However, blue OLEDs provide a higher light output and the quantum layer does not absorb light, on the contrary, the quantum dots light up after being illuminated with blue light. This allows for greater light dispersion. The panel can thus provide full brightness in all colors. The mask of the panel is also interesting, in which the individual points are folded into triangles, while the top is a green point, which is almost twice as large as the red and blue ones. The basic OLED layer is applied to the underlying metal plate, which ensures better heat distribution, so there is no risk of local overheating. Thanks to this, it can display the maximum achievable brightness and contrast without the risk of thermal overload of the display, which could lead to its degradation. This is also proven by our test, where even after watching the TV for a long time, we did not notice the panel heating up and it was cool to the touch. This is a very significant difference compared to current classic OLED panels. Overheating of the panel is, of course, also guarded by the electronics, which locally reduces the brightness when it is threatened. Just like last year, three sizes are available: 55, 65 and 77 inches. This time I had a 65″ model for the test, which is basically the starting diagonal for the 4K format.
The biggest innovation of the new product is the anti-reflective display. Although it may not seem like it, it is a fundamental improvement with which the novelty comes as the first ever on the market. You can therefore operate the TV even in brightly lit areas without the risk of reflections on the display. OLED Glare Free is very convincing and even strong light sources can only be seen as a soft spot on the switched off display. The image is brighter, has a higher contrast and its quality does not change even when viewed from extreme angles. The TV also supports a refresh rate of 144 Hz and VRR. From the outside, you will notice an improved design. The entire TV is only 12 mm thick, without any protrusions, has a thinner frame and uses the Slim One Connect external input box, which has a smaller height compared to other models. It is connected to the TV with only one thin, semi-transparent cable. You can place it out of sight with a long enough cable or directly behind the stand. There is a short cable for that in the package. This is great news especially for those who like to hang their TV on the wall, which can be done using a standard 400x400mm VESA mount. Unfortunately, this design doesn’t leave much room for speakers. As a result, the S95C only includes a basic version of the Samsung Object Tracking Sound system. However, it is true that such a TV automatically includes a high-quality soundbar. These are available from Samsung with Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony technology, ensuring cooperation in tandem with the TV’s speakers. This time I tested with the top Samsung Soundbar Q930D system.
Image processing is handled by the new generation Samsung 4K Neural Quantum Processor AI Gen.2 with the latest version of the Tizen OS. For lovers of a cinematic atmosphere, Filmmaker mode is available, which turns off some image enhancement processes and offers it unprocessed, in the form in which it came out of the studio. The TV traditionally supports HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ formats, unfortunately without Dolby Vision. The Slim One Connect box offers a connection with four HDMI inputs. All can handle 4K/144 Hz, VRR and ALLM, while HDMI 3 also supports eARC. You will also find three USB 2.0 inputs, one tuner for terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, an optical digital output and an Ethernet port. In terms of wireless connectivity, there is Wi-Fi, bluetooth and AirPlay 2 support.
The S95D TV comes with a new TM2360E plastic controller with a rechargeable battery that can be charged via the solar cell on the back or via USB-C. You can also use it to control other connected devices. The user interface, powered by the latest version of the Tizen platform, offers a wide selection of video streaming applications. However, you will also find an integrated Smart Things environment for controlling other devices in the home, along with voice control via Bixby, Google Assistant or Alexa services.
The TV continues in the footsteps of its predecessors and brings uncompromising image quality. It covers a color gamut of an impressive 92% of the BT.2020 color space. In Filmmaker mode, it works after calibration with an average color deviation δE of 0.7. These parameters guarantee an excellent image with deep blacks, excellent definition of shadows, precisely rendered details and natural colors. Image processing with a new AI chipset ensures high-level upscaling and image enhancement, and even lower-resolution content is watchable, while motion processing is just as capable, producing moving images without tearing or other motion artifacts. When displaying HDR, the TV can achieve a peak brightness of 1530 nits, while the overall brightness still reaches an excellent 250 nits. These are excellent values for OLED. This is, of course, thanks to the quantum dot layers used for red and green, which create wider and purer colors with HDR. When watching test videos, the TV provides an incredibly sharp picture with amazing color rendering and deep blacks, but unlike some classic OLED TVs with WOLED panels, details are not lost even in the deepest shadows. The TV reproduces a crystal-clear image with excellent motion processing, it will not be surprised even by demanding scenes with a large amount of detail. The TV has the prerequisites to become an excellent display even for demanding gamers, but they will have to make do with external game consoles for the time being – until Game Hub is released for our region as well.
The Samsung S95D performs convincingly in both SDR and HDR modes. The picture has a pleasantly natural impression, while the higher luminance ensures that viewing HDR is a real experience and the brightness surpasses conventional OLED models. Blacks are flawless, shadow detail is excellent, and motion processing is impressive. The only pity is the lack of Dolby Vision support.
