The Samsung Galaxy Fold was presented in February, but the market premiere is still pending because there were minor or major problems with the device. In principle, the start is expected this month, but it will only be possible to say for sure if Samsung really launches the device. At the same time, behind the scenes, developments continue, and it is clear from this that, despite the difficulties, Samsung has not given up on the concept of foldable mobile phones, but would continue to develop it. The Korean company has filed a patent that describes a device that folds into a “Z” shape; the mobile would be a huge tablet when unfolded, and a smartphone with a simple display when folded. The patent application was received by the Korean authorities at the end of 2018; and Samsung didn’t make a big deal of it so much that it only just discovered it completely by accident LetsGoDigital.
The biggest advantage of the solution is that it would have a wider aspect ratio in the display tablet mode compared to the foldable display phones presented so far, which results in a larger work surface (even equivalent to that of a notebook) – or a much more ideal aspect ratio for movies.
Samsung, on the other hand, has a lot of work to do if it wants to see this concept in practice, because with the mechanics used so far, the three “layers” would make such a phone so thick that it would be completely unsellable. And then we haven’t even talked about the crowd. In other words, the concept probably won’t become a market product for years – but of course it’s always interesting to see how some companies imagine the future.
