“I dreamed of becoming a pediatric anesthesiologist, but I gave up.”
The head of the Samsung Seoul Hospital resident division, one of the “Big 5” hospitals, appeared before the police on the 11th as a witness and made a direct hit at policy makers, saying, “Those in power who receive VIP treatment at higher-level hospitals are deciding medical policies.”
Kim Yu-young, the head of the Samsung Seoul Hospital resident group, appeared at the Mapo-gu Metropolitan Investigation Team building in Seoul on this day for questioning as a witness regarding the allegations that former and current executives of the Korean Medical Association (KMA) conspired to cause a mass resignation of residents.
He told reporters, “I’m angry that those in power who receive VIP treatment at higher-level hospitals whenever and wherever they are sick are deciding on medical issues and medical policies,” and “I dreamed of becoming an anesthesiology resident specializing in pediatric anesthesia, but I gave up on that dream.”
He was reluctant to respond to the question of whether he agreed with the claims of other representatives of majors that resignation from a major is a personal choice.
Police, who are investigating allegations that current and former executives of the Korean Medical Association conspired to force the mass resignation of medical residents, concluded their investigation of the executive board of the association in July and are currently continuing their investigation by calling in the resigned medical residents as witnesses.
On the 20th of last month, Park Dan, the vice chairman of the Korean Intern Resident Association (KIRRA), was summoned as a witness for questioning, and on the 5th of this month, the representatives of the residents at Seoul National University Hospital were questioned, and on the 9th, the representatives of the residents at Severance Hospital and Seoul Asan Medical Center were questioned. On the 13th, the representatives of the residents at Catholic Central Medical Center (CMC) are scheduled to appear at the police station.
In February, the Ministry of Health and Welfare reported current and former executives of the Korean Medical Association to the police, accusing them of interfering with the work of resident training hospitals by instigating, directing, or supporting the departure of residents.
The police are investigating the relevant parties, including Lim Hyeon-taek, the president of the Korean Medical Association, Kim Taek-woo, the vice chairman of the Korean Medical Association at the time, and Joo Su-ho, the chairman of the press relations committee, on charges of obstruction of business and instigation and abetment. They stated that “the mass resignation of residents was voluntary.”
