Samsung Set to Start Shipping CXL Memory Modules in H1

Smaller SK hynix has managed to take the leading position in the global HBM memory market, but Samsung Electronics hopes to compensate for this by likely becoming the leader in the CXL RAM segment, which will be used in server systems in the coming years. Samsung is ready to start supplying its solutions in this area in the current half of the year.

As Nikkei Asian Review explains, the CXL standard is open and has been promoted since 2019, and Samsung Electronics is the only memory manufacturer that is a member of the specialized consortium. This allows the company to count on being the first to promote memory modules with the CXL interface to the market. Samsung demonstrated the first memory module of this type back in 2021, and in June announced the creation of a pilot infrastructure for testing this memory, certified by software developer Red Hat.

According to Samsung representatives, the CXL memory market will start developing between 2027 and 2028. Yole Group analysts believe that by that time the capacity of this segment will grow from last year’s $14 million to $16 billion. Currently, companies interested in promoting the CXL standard are working to reduce production costs and form an infrastructure for mass production of corresponding memory modules. Formally, the introduction of CXL will increase the amount of RAM supported by one server system tenfold. In many cases, this will allow scaling the performance of server systems without physically increasing the number of installed racks. Samsung is determined to compete for the leading positions in the CXL memory market, but SK hynix and Micron Technology are also paying attention to the corresponding standard. CXL and HBM will play complementary roles in the development of server systems.
