Samsung sold more smartphones in the past quarter than in the same period last year. The South Korean brand sold almost 54 million phones. And with a market share of around 19 percent, the South Korean manufacturer is once again ahead of Apple. But the rise of a Chinese rival is remarkable.
Samsung remains the market leader in the smartphone market for the time being. According to research agency IDC The South Korean company’s phone sales grew less than Apple’s, but it did grow, by 0.7 percentage points. There was a small decline in Samsung’s market share: 1.1 percentage points less compared to a year ago.
Last week Samsung launched its new products and has now pinned its hopes on them for the coming months. The question is whether the demand for them will be as great as last year.
Xiaomi’s remarkable growth
What is particularly striking about the figures is the growth of Xiaomi, which is experiencing a growth in sales of no less than 27 percent compared to last year. The Chinese manufacturer is therefore in third place, with a market share of 14.8 percent (2.4 percentage points more than last year).
Another Chinese player is doing well
Other players, such as Chinese brands Vivo and Oppo, currently both serve 9 percent of the market, a lot less than the top three. Vivo is however experiencing interesting growth of almost 22 percent, comparable to Xiaomi. Oppo on the other hand hardly grew at all, with around 1.8 percent, slightly more than Apple (1.5 percent).
The total smartphone market grew by about 6.5 percent compared to a year ago. Due to the rise of Xiaomi, the uncertainty about the new Samsung products and the arrival of the iPhone 16, the list could soon look very different. According to some analysts, Apple’s new AI functions will be a reason for more consumers to buy a new iPhone sooner.
