Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition: thinner and larger

Samsung has officially presented the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in South Korea. The foldable device is thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and has larger screens. The main camera will also receive a major upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition official

After months of rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition has finally been officially launched. The luxurious ‘foldable’ is one step higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. At 10.6 millimeters, the device is about 1.5 millimeters thinner. When unfolded, the ‘Special Edition’ is only 4.9 millimeters thick.

On the inside we find an 8-inch OLED screen (compared to 7.6 inches on the Z Fold 6) and the OLED display on the outside measures 6.5 inches. That’s about 6.3 inches on the Fold 6. In addition, this panel has a wider aspect ratio of 21 to 9. This makes the screen resemble that of a normal, non-folding smartphone.

The design has also been adjusted. On the back we find a striped pattern. According to Samsung, the device is made entirely of premium materials such as glass and metal. The camera island is more rectangular instead of oval.

Speaking of the cameras: the main camera now has a resolution of 200 megapixels instead of 50. This is the lens that is also on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The other cameras are the same as those of the Z Fold 6. On the back we find a 12 megapixel wide-angle lens and a 10 megapixel telephoto lens, which makes the image 3x closer. The selfie cameras have resolutions of 10 and 4 megapixels.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy chip and has a 4400 mAh battery. Only one version will be released, with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There is also no choice in terms of color, because it only comes in black.

International release uncertain

Samsung mainly created the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition to compete with the thin foldables from Chinese manufacturers. Think of the OnePlus Open and the Honor Magic V3. The device will only appear in South Korea and China for the time being. It has a suggested retail price of more than $2,000.

It is uncertain whether the Special Edition will also come to the Netherlands later. Samsung may use a similar design for the regular Galaxy Z Fold 7 next year.
