Longer software support
Samsung is extending software support for its mid-range smartphones. Selected devices should be supplied for up to six years.
Samsung has expanded its update promises more and more in recent years and now promises seven Android updates for its top models in the Galaxy S and Z series. The mid-range models in the A series have so far received four Android updates. With the new generation of devices, Samsung is now introducing a new policy that will also provide the mid-range with longer update support.
How Gizchina reports, Samsung has now announced that some new models will receive Android and security updates over a period of six years. The recently introduced Galaxy A16 5G and Galaxy A16 4G are the first models to which this new regulation applies. With a price starting at 230 euros for the Galaxy A16 5G with 128 GB, these are entry-level or lower mid-range devices.
According to the report, Samsung wants to expand the new update promise to other mid-range models in the future. It is assumed that this will apply to future A-series models. The devices that have already been released – with the exception of the Galaxy A16 – should remain with their previous software support. This was four years of Android updates and five years of security updates for the A-Class models since 2022.
With the new update policy, Samsung is further expanding its software support, which is already one of the best in the Android world. While many manufacturers now promise update support over several years, especially for their top models, the update supply for cheaper smartphones is usually much shorter. Samsung is setting a good example here. We hope that many other manufacturers will follow suit.
