Sanders drops bombshell after Harris defeat: The Democratic Party has abandoned the working class

  • The veteran of American politics says the defeat was predictable and points to deep problems in the strategy.

Sanders drops bombshell after Harris defeat: The Democratic Party has abandoned the working class

“It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that a Democratic Party that has abandoned working-class people is finding that it has abandoned them. First it was the white working class, and now it’s Latino and black workers,” Sanders said, emphasizing that Americans are angry and want change, Good Morning America reports.

The senator, who himself ran for president in 2016 and 2020, points to several fundamental problems: income and wealth inequality continue to rise, Americans have not guaranteed paid medical and family leave, billions of dollars are being spent to support the war in Israel, “despite strong opposition from the majority of Americans”

Sanders questions the party leadership’s ability to learn from this failure: “Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign? Do they understand the pain and political alienation that tens of millions of Americans feel? Probably not.”

In this context, the senator asks for “very serious political discussions” about the future of those who support “basic democracy and economic justice”, promising to come back with more details.

Sanders’ statements come after Harris lost key states such as Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to Trump.
