Gmail is the most used email domain in the world and is used by around 1.8 billion users. It was launched in 2004, although the history of its development goes back to 2001, and it was created by programmer Paul Buchheit, who had the idea of web-based e-mail in his head since the 1990s. Gmail is simply a classic and could receive a very interesting and practical novelty.

A practical novelty for Gmail

The news that the server pointed out Android Authorityis a temporary email address, a thing that obviously exists in the internet world, but the big players, for some reason, don’t offer it. This handy feature is often available for free, and hints of this service coming to Gmail have been found in its Android app.

The temporary e-mail address here is referred to as “Shield Email” and will serve exactly the purpose one imagines under the term. The user can reach for it whenever a service asks him to enter an e-mail address, for example, to confirm the login and use it, he avoids entering his primary address.

Elegant spam protection

What are we talking about, as soon as a person enters his e-mail somewhere, he almost immediately becomes the target of all kinds of spam. This is partially solved by a temporary email address, because it acts as a kind of additional layer in front of the real address. The sites you enter this address in will send an email to it, and it will then get to your real site by being sent there by the temporary address.

As soon as you don’t want to use it, you simply cancel it and create a new one for the next need of another service. The main win is that you don’t have to enter your real address to send different verification codes. The temporary mailbox will only be used for receiving e-mails, sending them will not be possible due to security considerations.

When will we wait?

Unfortunately, this is one big unknown. The fact that mentions of a temporary email address were found within Gmail does not mean that Google will 100% send this feature to live. It may well happen that they stop development, or that they abandon the whole idea in the end. We will see, in any case, we will continue to follow this interesting news.

If you are interested in generating temporary e-mail addresses, our editors recommend using the service, for example Tempmail.
