Scholz vs. Merz: Third TV duel on Welt und Bild

After ARD/ZDF and RTL/ntv/stern, Axel Springer has now also announced a TV duel between Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Olaf Scholz (SPD). It takes place very shortly before the federal election.

A new Bundestag will be elected on February 23rd. Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to be re-elected; according to current polls, his opponent Friedrich Merz has a good chance of leading the party with the most votes. Scholz and Merz will duel in a big primetime TV duel on February 9th, broadcast by ARD and ZDF. Seven days later, on February 16th and also from 8:15 p.m., they will meet on RTL. This TV duel will also be shown by ntv and Stern. And there will be at least one more TV duel between the two.

As it became known on Friday evening, Scholz and Merz are also accepting Axel Springer’s invitation. There will be another clash on Wednesday, February 19th – just four days before the election. From 8:15 p.m. both will face each other on Welt and Bild.de. The duel will be moderated by Bild editor-in-chief Marion Horn and Welt editor-in-chief Jan Philipp Burgard.

That’s what Horn and Burgard say

Marion Horn, chairwoman of the Bild editorial team: “If you want to know what makes Germany tick, read Bild. Anyone who wants to know what makes those who want to rule Germany tick can find out at the election campaign finale on Bild und Welt, when Olaf Scholz and Friedrich Merz meet for the final duel. Jan Philipp Burgard and I will address the issues that are crucial to people’s elections.”

Jan Philipp Burgard, editor-in-chief of the Welt Group: “Welt is a leading debate medium. That’s why I’m very pleased to be able to welcome the Federal Chancellor and the opposition leader together with Marion Horn to the duel four days before the election. A political exchange of blows immediately before the voters make their decision is an expression of the vitality of our democracy.”
