Foreign. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to hold his first talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in nearly two years. This is reported by Die Zeit with reference to German government sources.

Although an official request has yet to be made, Die Zeit reports that talks between the two leaders are being considered ahead of the G20 summit in Brazil in November.

However, it is not clear exactly what Olaf Scholz plans to discuss with Putin.

The Kremlin has not yet commented on the possibility of a conversation between the two leaders.

Scholz and Putin last spoke by phone in December 2022. On that occasion, the German chancellor urged Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine and pursue a diplomatic solution to end the war.

Ukraine is under increasing pressure from the West to open negotiations with Russia. Ukraine’s military is struggling to restore its weakened forces, while Russian forces continue their offensive in eastern Ukraine, closing in on the key logistical hub of Pokrovsk.

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi visited the United States, where he hoped to gain permission to use American weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia and secure stronger security guarantees from Ukraine’s Western allies. However, Zelenskyy returned without having achieved success on these two central issues.
