Scout Traveler & Scout Terra

In 2022, Volkswagen announced that it will revive the American off-road brand Scout, which it bought in 2021, with a focus on creating authentic electric off-road vehicles (SUVs and pickup trucks).

The vehicles have now been officially presented in concept form, and the Traveler SUV model and the Terra pick-up will go into production in 2027.

The Germans announced earlier that the Scout Motors company will be separated from the main Volkswagen brand and will be “built on a new technical platform concept” that will bring “a new pick-up and the credibility of a solid SUV” over the current range of Volkswagen models.

The company is targeting a 10% market share in the rugged SUV (R-SUV) and pickup segments in the US. According to Volkswagen, electrification provides them with a historic opportunity to enter the very attractive pick-up and R-SUV segment as a group, emphasizing the ambition to become a relevant player in the American market.

The Scout SUV was previously manufactured by International Harvester, which traditionally made agricultural and commercial vehicles. It was produced between 1961 and 1980 as the company’s first passenger car, and was also available as a pick-up.

Scout Terra

In terms of dimensions, the new Traveler is 5280 mm long and has a wheelbase of 3058 mm, while the Terra is 5821 mm long and has a wheelbase of 3774 mm. Here is the information that the wheels can be up to 35 inches.

In addition to fully electric versions, Terra and Traveler will also offer an EREV option with range extension. The battery-electric versions have a pair of electric motors, but the information about the power has not been announced. It is known that it will have around 1350 Nm of torque, as well as that it will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.

Underpinning the pair is an 800-volt electric architecture, and the BEV variants will offer up to 350 miles of range (563 km). They also adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and support 350kW charging.

There is also an EREV version. Scout says they listened to customer concerns about the ability to charge electric vehicles, which is why the EREV option, called the Harvester, has been added. Only limited details have been released about this powertrain, but the company says it will include a small gasoline engine that will charge a high-voltage battery, increasing the range to more than 500 miles (804 km).

As for the interior, the two-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom and slightly curved top stands out, as does the digital instrument panel and infotainment screen.

All Scout models will be manufactured in the United States, and retail prices for the Terra and Traveler will start below $60,000. Pricing for the Terra could drop to $51,500 after incentives, while the Traveler will be available for $50,000 after incentives.
