If you were among those who were eagerly waiting for an artificial intelligence search engine from OpenAI, here we finally have one. Possible new rival for Google Search and Bing? Remains to be seen.
How SearchGPT works
OpenAI named their search engine SearchGPT. Instead of just providing websites that might answer any question we have for it, SearchGPT aims to answer directly, citing the sources (including links) from where it got the information. It has GPT-4 behind it and is currently in the prototype phase. Also, SearchGPT can be used by a limited number of people: 10,000. There is a waiting list that you can join whenever you want here. It is not yet known how long the wait is.
SearchGPT: Interface and how it works
What is SearchGPT’s interface like, you ask? Same as the one used by the famous ChatGPT. When you want to search for something, you simply enter the text into SearchGPT and it will come up with an answer based on what relevant sources and links it finds online. The search engine can even provide videos, pictures or graphics. If the answers did not clarify everything for you, you can ask for more information. That’s because OpenAI’s search engine understands what you’re asking it to search for and adapts to provide exactly what you want to find out.
Is this the perfect time to stop using Google just because SearchGPT offers AI-powered answers? Depends. As it is still in the testing phase, it may give errors and we cannot be sure that the information provided will be better than that provided by Google Search. In any case, OpenAI has big plans for SearchGPT: to integrate it into ChatGPT. We will have answers to the question after the search engine is out of the testing phase.
