The AI search features of SearchGPT are to be comprehensively integrated into ChatGPT in the long term, even for non-paying users. This means that OpenAI is intensifying the competition with Google, Bing and Co. even further.
AI answering machines, AI tools and AI chatbots are being used by more and more users for specific search purposes. This development is obvious, but can also be proven with numbers. According to the State of Search Report 2024 by Appinio and Claneo, a third of those surveyed in Germany were already regularly searching using tools such as ChatGPT and Co. in the summer, and the trend is rising.
At the end of July, OpenAI rolled out the prototype for SearchGPT, which bundles dedicated AI search features. SearchGPT should specifically respond to search queries with current answers and be able to cite relevant sources – just like Google, Bing and Co. This is reminiscent of Google’s AI overviews in search and Perplexity’s answers. The integration of SearchGPT into the ChatGPT experience was announced months ago. It has now even started for users who don’t pay for a subscription.

In the summer, the first test users had the opportunity to use SearchGPT. The search suite is now even available to some users of the free version of ChatGPT. We haven’t been able to use the functions ourselves yet. But an expanded roll-out could come soon and bring the SearchGPT features to all ChatGPT users. Then classic search engines like Google, but also AI answering machines like Perplexity, are likely to face even more competition.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has further optimized the source base for the search functions and conversation options. New collaborations with publishing houses ensure even more licensed insights from renowned publishers. The company recently announced a collaboration with Hearst.
