Ce Thursday December 26 marked the return of the most viewed series in Netflix history. Taking advantage of the Christmas holidays to conquer the living rooms of many users, Squid Game delivered its second round of episodes. 7 chapters were proposed to users of the platform, two fewer than in 2021. The reduced duration of the program is mainly explained by what the future holds for the characters and the creation of Hwang Dong-hyuk. A third season is on the programand it promises to conclude the journey of the character played by Jung-jae Lee as much as to provide answers about the organizers of these sadistic Olympics. Good news, spectators will not have to wait very long to discover it.
Netflix has already promised a return soon. Very soon even. The appointment is in fact made for the year 2025. We can expect that the end of the year will be the period favored by the streaming giant. On its TUDUM blog, Netflix shares a statement from the creator:
“I am more than happy to write this letter to announce the news of season 3, the final season. The fierce conflict between the two worlds (of Gi-hun and Front-Man) will continue in the season finale, which will be brought to you next year.
Learn even more about the Game Master
Netflix was quick to offer a new look at the season 2 finale. After all, many viewers have already finished this new burst of episodes thanks to the magic of binge-watching. The creator dwells on the past of the mysterious Front Man and the reasons that led him to take part in the game years agothen to get involved behind the scenes of this entertainment for very rich personalities.
In the first four episodes of season 2, we discover that the Front-Man also had problems with creditors. His wife was very ill, pregnant, and awaiting a liver transplant. So he borrowed as much money as possible to find a donor. We also learn that he gave a kidney to his brother Jun-ho years earlier, and that he could not sell the second to finance the transplant for his wife. When his wife died, he turned to gaming and lost all faith in humanity. His vision of games is therefore very different from that of Oh Il-nam, who saw competition as a way of giving a second chance for someone doomed to live in poverty.
This parallel between the two men is supported by Hwang In-ho’s participation in these new games, when he seizes number 1 to follow the competition from the inside. Quite cleverly, the narration has chosen to make him a major ally for Gi-hun, as much as an enemy when he is under his mask. Season 3 should be an opportunity to explore this idea further. Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Game Master, explains that he had many questions while preparing for season 2.
“I asked questions like, ‘Why is he acting this way? Why does he say that?’ Having to give different nuances to each of these three identities (Game Master, In-ho and Young-il) was the biggest challenge, but also the most fun for me as an actor.”
See you in 2025 to see how things will evolve for our hero and his rival and to discover how the series will manage to reinvent its concept. Over the next few days, season 2 audiences will be observed to determine the success of this return. Squid Game season 1 is the most viewed season on Netflix, all languages combined. Netflix undoubtedly hopes to do as well, and allow the universe to become legendary.
