A total of 15 different gaming universes are presented in cinema quality in the Amazon Prime series “Secret Level”. Also included: Sony’s discontinued gaming brand “Concord”.
“Secret Level” is an animated anthology series in which each episode is dedicated to a different gaming universe.
The series project was unveiled by its creator Tim Miller on this year’s Gamescom stage and the introductory words were already emotional.
Together with the talented artists at Blur Studios, Miller has been creating eye-catching cinematics for games for 30 years, including such illustrious gaming brands as “GTA”, “Halo”, “Batman: Arkham”, “Bioshock”, “Star Wars”, “Mass Effect”. “, “Dark Souls” and “Call of Duty”.
As director of the movie “Deadpool,” Miller proved that he can also lead film projects to success. Previously, Miller produced short film sequences for decades that can be admired in, among others, “Verblendung”, “Avengers” and “Avatar”.
With master director David Fincher, Miller has a powerful advocate in the film industry. This not only allows Miller and his production team to express themselves creatively, but Fincher’s support also makes financing his unconventional film and series projects easier.
With “Love Death + Robots” Miller and his team finally catapulted themselves into the film and series Olympus. The series, which has now been produced in three seasons, tells independent and impressive sci-fi short stories in varied animated images.
“LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS” is in the best tradition of the “Heavy Metal” comics and certain parallels to the “Animatrix” short films cannot be denied.
From animation to stop motion to photorealism, each individual episode is presented in its own unique style. The age rating from 18 years is completely justified, because there is no skimping on violence and sexual scenes in some episodes.
“LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS” serves as a kind of blueprint for the new series “Secret Level”. Each of the 15 independent episodes represents a loving homage to well-known gaming brands.
For Miller and his team, “Secret Level” is a project close to his heart that is coming true. The video game series was in the works for 3 years and required even longer preparation time.
Miller’s passion for films and games and his talent for financing unconventional large-scale projects make it possible for “Secret Level” Season 1 to consist of 15 episodes, spanning from “Mega Man” to “Warhammer 40000”.
A lot of star power is also ensured, as actors such as Keanu Reeves and Arnold Schwarzenegger will make a guest appearance using digital images.
Also included are sci-fi titles like “Armored Core” and Sony’s game title “Concord,” which was discontinued in record time. The episode in the world of “Concord” in particular should once again painfully illustrate what would have been possible if the Playstation game had relied on a compelling story, a single-player mode and original character design.
Anyone who follows the episode of “Concord” in “Secret Level” might rub their eyes in amazement when, in comparison, the discontinued online multiplayer game “Concord” is played in YouTube videos.
What Miller and his team can achieve in the best case scenario with “Secret Level” is that the passion for creative art spills over into other media. After all, “Secret Level” doesn’t just want to be an audiovisual copy of well-known gaming brands, but rather creates distinctive worlds, interesting characters and exciting stories that will stay in your memory for years.
From December 10th, fans of video games can see for themselves whether Miller’s passionate series project is also convincing in terms of content. “Secret Level” is available on Amazon Prime.
