Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin made statements about secularism at the AK Party Batman Central District 8th Ordinary Congress held at the Hatice Nasıroğlu Conference Hall in Batman.
Minister Tekin stated that he was criticized for the sentences he made, “What you said is wrong in terms of secular education” and said, “I also say that it may be against you, but it is not against the values of the citizens in Batman and Erzurum. If there is something wrong, what you understand from secularism is that of citizens.” “There is a contradiction between what he understands,” he said.
Tekin said: “What you understand by secularism is this; remember the 1940s, locking the doors of mosques, turning mosques into stables, forbidding citizens from learning the Quran. This is what you understand by secularism. You did these as a requirement of secularism. Then What you understand by secularism is not the same as what I understand by secularism. Religious belief and worship of all citizens, no matter what religion they believe in. I understand that their freedom is guaranteed by the state. What do you understand? You understand that Muslims’ freedom of belief is shackled and prohibited. Then, there is undoubtedly a difference between our understanding of secularism.
I am in favor of universal secularism, but you are imposing on me the concept of secularism that you invented, specific to Turkey. This does not happen. What you understand from secularism is this; Trying to convince the child who wanted to go to university with a headscarf by taking him to persuasion rooms, you did this out of secularism. While doing this, you defended yourself with secularism. So, are the secularism you advocate the same as the secularism I understand? Not one.”
CHP took action: He should be dismissed!
CHP Deputy Chairman for Election and Party Legal Affairs Gül Çiftçi reacted very harshly to Minister Tekin’s words and demanded his dismissal.
Çiftçi wrote the following on his social media account: “No one can target the republic with false and distorted statements. We will file a criminal complaint against the Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin for his statements that are hostile to the republic and secularism. Tekin should be dismissed immediately. A person with this mentality has no contribution to offer to our children.” .”
