Violence, especially domestic violence against women, is a serious problem in Finland. Violence is often also psychological in nature. Both the victim and the perpetrator need help.
Violence is not only physical as is often thought in Finnish society. It is increasingly spiritual in nature. In light of the statistics, 49 percent of women and 42 percent of men have experienced emotional violence in their relationship.
– According to several experts, mental violence is at least as damaging to the victim. However, mental violence has not been investigated much in the preliminary investigation by the police. In 2025, a new classification form, mental violence, will be added to the police’s crime reporting system, says police inspector Pekka Heikkinen from the Police Board.

35,000 violent crimes come to the attention of the police every year. The police urge both the victim and the perpetrator to seek help for the violence problem and to file a criminal report.
