Sensation! Phones from China have beaten luxury iPhones, people are buying them more often

  • Xiaomi became the second largest smartphone seller in the world in August 2024, overtaking Apple
  • Xiaomi’s success is said to be the result of a new product strategy and expansion into new markets
  • However, the position may be temporary due to Apple’s seasonal decline ahead of the launch of new iPhones

Who would have said that? Xiaomi, the Chinese manufacturer, which until a few years ago was synonymous with cheap phones of dubious quality, in August 2024 rose to second place in the global ranking of smartphone sales. And who did he depose? None other than Apple itself.

According to data from Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi has reached the silver position for the first time since August 2021. And this despite the fact that its sales remained virtually unchanged month-on-month. How is that possible? Simply – Apple traditionally experiences a seasonal decline in Augustbecause everyone is waiting for the new iPhones.

Tarun Pathak, director of research at Counterpoint, commented: “Xiaomi has bet on a leaner product strategy this year. Instead of a flood of models in each price category, they focused on one flagship model for each segment. And apparently it works.”

Xiaomi scores mainly in the lower price categories, where it beats the competition with its models Redmi 13 a Redmi Note 13. But beware, the company did not sleep even in the premium segment. With foldable phones and ultra models, it breathes on the back of even the most expensive ones. The cooperation with the German Leica has borne fruit in the form of cameras that match and in some cases surpass all competition in terms of quality.

But is it a lasting success? Hard to say. With the arrival of the new iPhone 16 series, Apple will probably return to the top again, on the other hand, the traditionally successful “dot” series from Xiaomi is also around the corner.
