Serious situation in the Republic of Moldova. Drastic measures to reduce electricity consumption

The emergency measures adopted by the Chisinau government will target both ordinary people and state institutions and companies. In a message on Facebook, President Maia Sandu asked citizens to unplug appliances they do not use and to reduce the temperature in their homes by one degree to avoid disconnections in the middle of winter.

The Russian state company will no longer deliver the natural gas on the basis of which almost all of the country’s electricity needs were produced.

Public buildings will have to reduce interior lighting by up to 30%, and shops will no longer be able to illuminate their windows and advertisements outside of the program. The government recommended to the big consumers to move their activity during the night, outside the peak hours.

The Republic of Moldova decreed shas an energy emergency two weeks ago, after Gazprom announced that it would no longer supply gas to the separatist region of Transnistria, from where Chisinau was supplied at much lower prices.

“Russia is now using this winter, because they, Russia, are active in the blackmail chapter in the winter. They do not respect the contract they signed, which says very clearly: until 2026, they will bring the gas to the border entrance. That is their task, no our”declares Igor Grosu, the president of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

The Republic of Moldova will buy more electricity from Romania

So for three months, energy companies from the Republic of Moldova will buy three times more electricity from Romania.

“The request of our brothers across the Prut was to support them with electricity to buy on a commercial basis. So far they have reached an agreement with Nuclearelectrica and there are also discussions with the Oltenia Energy Complex for another 150-200 MW”stated Sebastian Burduja, Minister of Energy.

The Gazprom company says that the Republic of Moldova has unpaid invoices of more than 700 million dollars.

“We reduce energy consumption during peak hours – in the morning between 7:00-11:00 and in the evening between 18:00-23:00. We avoid the simultaneous use of several electrical equipment. We turn off the light in the rooms we are not in. We remove unplug the devices we don’t use. We reduce the temperature of the air conditioner by one degree”President Maia Sandu wrote on Facebook.
