Seven experts working in the Czech Republic are also among the most cited scientists in the world

Prague – Seven experts working in the Czech Republic belong to the new list Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers 2024 among one percent of the world’s most cited researchers. Among them are, for example, the environmental microbiologist Petr Baldrián, the ecologist and botanist Petr Pyšek or the physicist Tomáš Jungwirth, who this year received the highest Czech scientific award, the Česká hlava. The Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (AV ČR) drew attention to the ranking of Czech scientists in a press release today.

Valdrián works at the Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, where he heads the Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology. He is known for his research on microbial processes in soils, their influence on ecosystems and the function of soil microorganisms in the carbon cycle.

Pyšek, which deals with biological invasions, has been on the list for ten years continuously. He too won the Czech Head award in the past. It deals with how and why invasive plant species spread, what factors influence this process and what effects invasions have on nature and people. He is also currently researching the biodiversity of African savannahs. He works at the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Jungwirth from the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is a world expert in spintronics, which is a field connecting physics, electronics and the properties of electron spin. This research has implications for modern data technologies such as memory devices and processors. In recent years, Jungwirth has focused on antiferromagnetic spintronics research and discovered a previously unknown class of magnets called altermagnets.

Among the other scientists on the list is Petr Neužil, cardiologist and head of the Cardiology Department of Na Homolce Hospital in Prague. He is an expert especially in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. His fellow American cardiologist Vivek Y. Reddy, who works at the same hospital, also made the list.

Another scientist from the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is cited – Jan Pergl. Similar to Pyšek, he deals with invasive species. His research focuses primarily on the study of ecological and evolutionary processes that influence the spread of invasive plants and their impacts on local ecosystems. The list also mentions Dmitri Chudakov, an expert in molecular biology and genetics working at the Masaryk University in Brno.

The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list is a list published by Clarivate Analytics and is one of the more prestigious rankings. The award recognizes scientists who have achieved the highest number of citations in a specific field of research during a specific period. This year’s list of the world’s most cited scientists includes 6,636 names from more than 1,200 institutions in 59 countries and regions. It is based on an analysis of scientific publications from 2013 to 2023.

Other rankings that track the most cited researchers include, for example, Google Scholar Citations, Leiden Ranking, Elsevier’s Scopus Highly Cited Researchers. But the ranking was also published by Stanford University in 2020, for example. It included two percent of the best scientists in various fields based on citations.
