Trump will enjoy substantial support for his policy agenda in Congress as well, after the Republican Party regained control of the Senate.
In his victory speech, Trump promised to “govern by a simple motto: Promises made, promises kept. We will keep our promises.”, shows the BBC.
But in some cases, he has offered few details about how he plans to achieve his goals.
Asked in 2023 by Fox News if he would abuse his power or target his political opponents, he said he would not, “except on the first day.”
British journalists made a selection of Trump’s campaign promises and came up with seven important things that the future president said he would do in this term:
1) Deportation of undocumented migrants
In his campaign, Trump promised the largest mass deportations of undocumented migrants in US history. He also pledged to complete construction of the wall on the border with Mexico, begun during his first presidency.
Experts told the BBC that deportations on the scale promised by Trump would face huge legal and logistical challenges and could slow economic growth.
2) Economic measures, new taxes and tariffs
Trump has promised to “end inflation” — which rose to high levels under President Joe Biden before falling again. However, a president’s power to influence prices directly is limited.
He also promised massive tax cuts, extending the reform of 2017. He proposed eliminating the tax on tips, eliminating the tax on social security payments and reducing the corporate income tax.
It also proposed new tariffs of at least 10 percent on most foreign goods to reduce the trade deficit. Imports from China could face an additional 60% tax. Some economists have warned that such measures could raise prices for ordinary people.
3) Reducing climate regulations
During his first presidency, Trump rolled back hundreds of environmental protections and made America the first nation to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
This time, he again promised to cut regulations, particularly as a way to support the American auto industry. He has consistently criticized electric vehicles, vowing to roll back Biden’s targets to encourage the switch to greener cars.
He has pledged to increase fossil fuel production in the US – vowing to “drill, drill, drill” from day one in favor of renewable energy sources such as wind power. It wants to open up areas like the Arctic wilderness to oil drilling, claiming it would lower energy costs — though analysts are skeptical.
4) The end of the war in Ukraine
Trump criticized the tens of billions of dollars the US has spent supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia and vowed to end the conflict “within 24 hours” through a negotiated settlement. He did not say what he thought each side should concede. Democrats say the move would embolden President Vladimir Putin.
Trump wants the US to generally withdraw from foreign conflicts. Regarding the war in Gaza, Trump positioned himself as a staunch supporter of Israel, but urged the American ally to end its operations.
5) No ban on abortion
Against the wishes of some supporters, Trump said during the presidential debate with Kamala Harris that he would not sign a law banning abortion nationwide.
Trump himself has said several times that states should be free to decide their own abortion laws, but he has had trouble finding a consistent message on the subject.
6) Pardoning some of the participants in the January 6 riot
Trump said he would “set free” some of those convicted of crimes during the January 6, 2021 riot in Washington DC, when his supporters stormed the Capitol to block Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. More deaths have were attributed to the violence, which Trump has been accused of inciting. Donald Trump continues to say that many of them are “wrongfully incarcerated,” though he acknowledged that “a few of them probably got out of hand.”
7) Dismissal of Special Counsel Jack Smith
Trump has vowed to fire the veteran prosecutor leading two criminal investigations against him “within two seconds” of taking office.
Special counsel Jack Smith has accused Trump of allegedly trying to sway the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents. Trump denies any wrongdoing and managed to prevent any of the cases from going to court before the election. He says Smith subjected him to a “political witch hunt.”
