Maja Nosan is accused of stabbing her common-law partner Alen Petko to death in June in Kočevje. The court called her to face criminal responsibility on Monday, but the hearing was canceled because there was no lawyer at the court.
On June 22 this year, 33-year-old Alen Petek was stabbed to death in an apartment block at Trg svete Jerneja 2 in Kočevje. According to the prosecutor’s office, his life was taken by his 39-year-old extramarital partner Maja Nosan. She allegedly stabbed him in the chest with a large kitchen knife and wounded her partner so badly that he died on the spot.
The Ljubljana District Court engaged a psychiatric expert in the judicial investigation, who concluded that the accused was in a state of significantly reduced competence at the time of the crime due to the syndrome of addiction to psychoactive substances. A toxicological examination showed that after the event, she had 3.8 parts per million of alcohol in her urine and 2.4 parts per million in her blood. Friday was also very drunk that day.
The prosecution charges the 39-year-old woman with the crime of murder. Ljubljana District Judge Eva Senica Visočnik called Majo Nosan to criminal responsibility on Monday. Judicial officers brought her from the women’s prison in Igo, where she is in custody, but in vain. The hearing did not take place, as he is her defense attorney Matevž Tratar forgot to come to court, or rather he told the judge in a telephone conversation on Monday that he did “missed the date of the hearing”. The judge had no choice but to postpone the preliminary hearing. It will be held in mid-November, Večer reports.
He does not remember the tragic event
Due to the postponement of the preliminary hearing, the prosecutor’s office did not publicly present the indictment on Monday, but some details about what happened on June 22 in the apartment where the couple lived for about two months are still known. They also lived together before, in the Kočevo settlement of Stari Log. During the court investigation, the defendant said that Petek had major problems with alcohol addiction, as he had been drinking every day for several years. She admitted that she drank a lot herself, although not every day, but on the fateful day, a lot. That day, the couple had been drinking since ten in the morning in the company of a neighbor Goran Ž. When the latter left, the accused had a serious fight with her partner, but she did not say anything more during the investigation, as she defended herself by saying that she did not remember what happened, apart from the fact that she saw her partner lying in front of the door and that the paramedics were reviving him. In the court investigation, she also testified that Petek was often physically and mentally violent towards her, especially when he was under the influence of alcohol. A month before the incident, she was allegedly beaten so hard that she needed medical attention. She also confessed that she resisted her violent partner twice and hit him back, in one incident with a cup, in the other with a frying pan, but that he took her away unharmed.
She had bloody hands
Rescuers found Petko seriously injured in front of the door of the apartment. They were called by a neighbor, Goran Ž., who came across a bloody scene and thought that Petek had injured himself in a fall. A neighbor also called for help, who testified in the investigation that Petka saw him stagger, after which he suddenly fell to the ground. She remembered that he was covered in blood and had a towel wrapped around his neck. At one point, she also noticed Maja Nosan on the stairs, who, according to the testimony of a neighbor, shouted “don’t let me die, don’t let me die” when she saw Petko. When paramedics arrived, they noticed her hands were bloody, so they asked her if she had injured him. She accosted them and allegedly said “I stabbed him a little” before bursting into tears and screaming.
When the police were collecting information about the crime, several neighbors told them that the fight on June 22 was not the only incident between Maja Nosan and Alen Petko, as they had heard extremely loud noises coming from their apartment many times before and suspected that they were not just a verbal argument between them, but much worse violence. According to the testimony of their neighbors, it was particularly noisy with them on the 20th of the month, when they received social assistance, went to the store to buy alcohol and started drinking.
