The first season of ‘Sherwood’ from 2022 was perhaps the best British crime series of this decade with its kitchen-sink realistic handling of division and animosity in a mining town that had never recovered from the trauma of Margaret Thatcher’s almost rock-hard handling of labor disputes in the 1970s.
And not only was it dazzling in its dual strategy: crime fiction and political reflection. It also offered acting of the excellent character that makes many an English crime series worth watching and preferable to, not least, Danish counterparts with all their revue shouting, tøhø humor and scripted plots.
