The British musician or singer Ed Sheeran revealed that in the summer of 2024, just before the performance with Taylor Swift, he helped the Ipswich Town club with the arrival of one player.
The thirty-three-year-old musician is an investor in the Premier League newcomer, whom he has been a fan of since childhood. The British star is now also a part of the working group that recruits footballers to the team.
“In the summer we tried to convince one particular player to join our club and we realized very quickly that he was a fan of Ed Sheeran,” Ipswich chief executive Mark Ashton said at the Soccerex event in Miami, USA, continuing:
“Ed went on Zoom and chatted with him right before he went on stage with Taylor Swift. I think that was a key part of this transfer.”
Ashton refused to specify which footballer it was. However, he noted: “He’s already scored a few goals.”
Sheeran and Swift performed together in London at Wembley Stadium on Thursday, August 15. A day later, Ipswich signed Irish attacking midfielder or forward Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers.
When he scored the winning goal against Tottenham in November, he posted a photo with Sheeran on social media.
Sheeran is the best-known fan of Ipswich Town and has been a shirt sponsor of the A-team since 2021. As a minority owner of the club, he has access to the owners’ box and regularly attends the club’s matches.
At the aforementioned event in Miami, Ashton was unabashed in his praise of Sheeran, noting with a smile: “He’s a local man, a global superstar, a football club sponsor, now a shareholder and officially part of the recruiting team.”
