Companies are slowly increasing the length of “short videos”, with TikTok videos now exceeding ten minutes. Now, YouTube appears to be the next service to broaden its definition of “short video,” as the company will soon extend the length limit for Shorts from one minute to three.
YouTube Shorts is getting a length increase to three minutes
As advertised no blog YouTube, the company is preparing some big changes to Shorts. The main highlighted feature is an increase in the length of videos you can upload.
Longer shorts, more of you. From October 15th, it will be possible to upload Shorts up to 3 minutes long. This was one of the most requested features from creators, so we're excited to give you more flexibility to tell your story.
If you want to upload a three-minute video, YouTube says that increasing the length only works on videos with a "square or larger aspect ratio." Additionally, only videos uploaded on or after October 15th will be eligible for the three-minute length increase, so don't upload anything if you already have a good idea for a longer video.
Shorts get more useful updates
The increased length isn't the only thing YouTube has for fans of short videos. It seems that the giant is taking more features from TikTok by adopting a new template system. When remixing a YouTube Short, you'll find a new "Use template" button that allows you to use the Short's audio and effects, how templates work on TikTok.
YouTube Shorts will also have a "Trending" section in the mobile app that shows the type of content people are looking for. If you ever have difficulty finding content, you can use the button at the top to quickly find new trends you can get involved in.
YouTube is also allowing people to add video clips to Shorts. The company says it's a great way for people to remix or adapt current content on the platform, but it can also become a valuable tool for content creators who want to cut a longer video from their channel into smaller, shareable Shorts.
