Unknown gunmen attacked this evening inside the complex of the presidential residence in the capital of Chad, N’Djamena, the AFP agency wrote.
According to Reuters sources, a convoy of military vehicles arrived at the presidential palace after the reported shooting, and a spokesman for the Chadian government said the situation was under control.
“It’s nothing serious, don’t panic, the situation is under control,” Chad’s Infrastructure Minister Aziz Mahamat Saleh also wrote on the Internet without further details. The shooting occurred at 20:45 CET and the access roads to the palace were subsequently closed, according to AFP.
The incident in N’Djamena took place just hours after a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang I. He met with several government officials in Chad, including the country’s president, Mahamat Idriss Déby.
At the end of November, Chad announced that it was ending military cooperation with France, which had lasted 60 years since the end of French rule over the country.
Déby was installed as president by a military junta that took power in April 2021 after the death of his father, Idrisse Déby. He ruled the country for 30 years. The army then promised to call presidential elections in 18 months, but then extended the transitional period until 2024. This sparked a series of protests in the country. The results of the parliamentary elections of last December 29 are expected this month.
