Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova responded to German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock’s suggestion that Russian bases in Syria should be removed, saying that Berlin should be more concerned about American bases spread across Germany.
Namely, Berbokova, who arrived today on an unannounced visit to Damascus, said that Russia should give up its military bases in Syria in order to “show respect for the sovereignty of that Middle Eastern country”.
“And that’s what the minister of foreign affairs of the country where the US military bases are located tells us. I have a question – isn’t it time to send such statements to Washington?” Zakharova wrote on Telegram.
Let’s recall that a little earlier the head of the new Syrian authorities, Ahmed el-Shara, stated that Damascus has interests with Russia and considers it the second most powerful country in the world.
Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow was not aware of the revision of the agreement on Russian military bases in the country by the new Syrian authorities, and that it had not received a request from Damascus on this issue. He noted that the working conditions, maintenance and support of Russian military bases in Syria could be the subject of negotiations with the country’s new authorities.
