George Simion entered the room where the election debate was taking place at Antena 3 CNN, although he initially announced that he would not participate.
Simion was asked how he comments on the information transmitted by the president of the SRI Control Commission that there are images of him during discussions with GRU agents.
“A PNL senator or deputy is in the electoral campaign. The position of the SRI was clearly stated. So it’s not about anyone from the SRI. I ask the SRI to say any evidence, any evidence it has,” said Simion.
A journalist asked Simion how he comments on the statement of the police chief from Moldova who said that several coaches with citizens from the Republic were stopped at the border. Moldova who were paid various amounts of money by Kremlin-controlled organizations to participate in the AUR protest organized at the EPP Summit in the spring of 2024. The same police chief spoke about Simion’s connections with pro-Russian politicians in Chisinau.
“There are denigrations and unjustified attacks against us. I also appeal to Mr. Ciolacu, to the authorities, to the Police… (…). They did not exist and I have no knowledge of such coaches. We organized a protest at the EPP Summit. There was no violence (…). My ban in Rep. Moldova and Ukraine is strictly linked to the unionist activities that I have and have carried out”, answered George Simion.
Asked about the images in which he would appear with Russian GRU agents, images that MEP Cristian Terheş said had reached Brussels, George Simion said he had nothing to fear: “I don’t have skeletons in the closet. If there are images they can appear. The only information from the public space is that after 2 years, around 2012, I would have seen myself with someone from an agency…”.
Asked if he was a Russian agent, Simion said: “No.”
Later, Simion was asked how he could represent Romania as president, being persona non grata in Moldova and Ukraine. He answered: “Better than Mr. Ciolacu and as good as Mr. Donald Trump.” However, Donald Trump does not have any kind of ban on entering any state.
Simion was asked if he will withdraw from the electoral race if the images in which he appears with GRU agents appear in the public space. Simion said: “Certainly. And I ask the SRI to say if there are authentic images of me”.
“There are accusations and clear evidence that one of the candidates, George Simion, had meetings with GRU officers and even tried to subvert peaceful meetings, electoral support marches. We still don’t know if George Simion tried to hijack”, said the president of the SRI Control Commission, Ioan Chirteş. He mentioned that the state authorities must shed light on this case.
