The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has a clear path to a great result, after receiving yet another important news.
The double winner of Grand Slam tournaments will play at the WTA 250 category tournament in Hong Kong, where Naomi Osaka and Emma Răducanu will be absent.
What news did Simona Halep receive and how does the road to a great result open up for her
Between October 28 and November 2 the WTA 250 Hong Kong tournament takes placewhere Simona Halep received a wildcard. Although they were announced at the start of the competition, the British player Emma Răducanu and the Japanese Naomi Osaka said that they will not play. In both cases it is about medical problems.
Răducanu was injured in the quarter-final match with Daria Kasatkina in Seoul. She suffered a sprained knee and sat out the next five tournaments that took place.
“The healing and recovery of my leg is progressing well. I need a little more time before I’m in shape. I hope I can come back and play this tournament in the future”, wrote Emma Răducanu on X.
Instead, Diana Shnaider (16 WTA), Magdalena Frech (24 WTA), Katie Boulter (33 WTA), Dayana Yastremska (34 WTA), Leylah Fernandez (35 WTA) or Anastasia will play at the tournament in Hong Kong Potapova (37 WTA).
Naomi Osaka has a bulging back disc and torn abdominal muscles
As for Naomi Osaka, the situation is much worse. She is absent not only from the competition in Hong Kong, but also from the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup, which will take place next month. In the first round, Japan meets Romania, and the winner will continue to play Italy.
“I thought I had dislocated my back, but I had an MRI in Beijing. They said I had a bulging disc in my back and also tore my abdominal muscles. I trained in Los Angeles to play here.
I did another MRI and it said I still have tears. I’ve played so many tournaments this year, so it was the hardest decision not to play this tournament and not to play the Billie Jean King Cup,” she said.
The Japanese won the Australian Open and the US Open twice, in 2019 and 2021, respectively in 2018 and 2020. This year’s best performance is quarter-finals in Doha and Hertogenbosch.
Total prize money at the Hong Kong tournament is worth US$267,082. The winner will receive a check for $35,250. Attendance in the first round of the WTA 250 competition in Asia is rewarded with $7,095.
